This ONLINE two-part workshop will kickstart your journey on experimenting with small-gauge filmmaking!

Following the simplest steps using the most accessible equipment/materials, participants will pre-view introductory videos online and then meet for two 1 ½ hour live online sessions with Sandy McLennan. These videos and live interactive online meetings will provide foundational information, encouraging you to try out analogue filmmaking at its most budget-conscious level – so you have an experience and learn whether this medium suits you or not.

Session 1: Introduction to the Regular 8mm format, loading the camera, shooting a roll, creating a temporary dark space: why is it needed and how is it employed. Questions about what participants have tried, or need to know in order to get started.

Session 2: Processing black & white negative film, copying film to digital by projecting on a wall while shooting with a video camera. Questions about what participants have tried, or need to know in order to keep going..

Sandy McLennan loves working with old and new photo imaging and sound recording media: right tool at the right time. He expresses current personal and state-of-the-world emotions via analogue motion pictures (Regular/Double 8mm, 16mm, super 8), photo paper imaging (pinhole camera, photograms, contact prints), portable and home darkroom thaumaturgy, digital sound recording/editing, video and installations. By creating workshops, he very much enjoys helping people try old technology for the first time – so they have an experience, and learn whether the medium suits them or not.
