6:00pm - 7:00pm | All I Had I Gave by Christina Dovolis | Film Installation
Description:
Created as part of the Niagara Artist Centre’s (NAC) XCAVATE residency and exhibited in an abandoned office building, All I Had I Gave materializes some of my memories (and nightmares) of growing up in the American Midwest.
I began by working with the NAC archive, which has an incredible collection of analogue film equipment, slides, and 8mm and 16mm films. The donated family home movies particularly struck me: sunbathing on the perfectly green lawn, blowing out birthday candles, prom. I then took familiar symbols from my upbringing (religious crosses, stars and stripes, fireworks, soaring eagles, a pair of sexy legs) and digitally animated them into a series of short, repetitive sequences. The animations were separated into individual frames, laser-cut as stencils, and spray-painted directly onto the archival film before the reels were hand-tinted red. The film was later spliced into continuous loops for two 8mm projections. The projectors are positioned so that each casts its image into the other’s shadow, illuminating both the film and the apparatus itself. Images of spinning crosses and stars obscure 1960s family footage. Each loop plays continuously until the film catches in the gate or the projector gives out. It’s the repetitive performance of American identity—whatever that means: faith, patriotism, family, sex… repeated until exhaustion.

A self portrait on my 38th birthday, which I spent alone in a strangers’ apartment. I searched for messages from the pictures on the walls. I sat in every chair. Anne died and I was getting older. Nothing else happens. Dedicated to Anne Charlotte Robertson.
Jimmy Schaus | Fuego rápido | 2022 | Spain | 3 min | Super 8 | 18fps
Bonfires, police lights and an enormous moon illuminate the youthful antics of Noche de San Juan in Madrid, closing the year’s longest day.
Pablo Agma | Bomarzo Tremor | 2025 | Austria, Italy, Spain | 3 min 8 sec | Super 8 | 18fps
Bomarzo Tremor draws from the Sacro Bosco of Bomarzo, Italy, to imagine a seismic awakening of its sculptures, an image-tremor that shakes them out of stillness. The film triggers this quake through analog techniques that corrode the celluloid, making what is petrified seem to move, and letting the tremor spread into the town itself.

In the late 18th century, German Mennonites moved north en masse from Pennsylvania and settled along the Grand River on traditional Chonnonton, Anishinaabeg, and Haudenosaunee territories. The reverberations of this colonial migration are still felt by the people living and working on the land today. A people implicated in and perpetuating a centuries long system of suffering, violence, and theft. Heaven (Extended) is comprised of ten 1-shot Super 8 rolls and presented with an asynchronous audio track.
